Hi. Been a while.
I’ve been having a bit of a crappy time lately, so haven’t felt up to posting or writing or anything even faintly acquainted with productive. That’s all over with now, and life is taking a slight turn to the positive so I’m going to make the most of it and blog about one of my all time favourite things.
This is the comic that started a (currently) 15 year love of collecting. A tale about faith, belief and the search for it when it eludes you. It’s also a parable for the life of Jesus. But most importantly, the thing that will really keep you turning the pages, is that its a tale of a vampire, a hitman and a Preacher (funny that) with the voice of God. That is to say, not his actual voice but one you can’t disobey if heard. So if he was to say….go screw yourself for instance, you would. And as one unlucky character would have it, he did.
That’s the kind of crazy ass story Preacher is. It’s also a modern day western and a pitch black comedy.
Preacher is well over 15 years old now, so why mention it? Because AMC, home to Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead have decided to commission a pilot of it. Those crazy bastards.
I love that its happening, but I really can’t see how you can put this on TV. There’s a character called Arseface ffs. Do I need to explain why he’s called Arseface? I don’t think so.
It’s not the first time it’s been suggested as a tv show, previously HBO were going to have a go with that nutjob who brought us the Daredevil and Ghost Rider films. (Can’t remember his name and I’m sure history will be with me on that one.) Fortunately, that didn’t pan out. The hopes I have for this one are that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are behind it, and their history (Superbad, This is the End) suggests better than a blind fella in red leather that looks like Ben Affleck.
So if you didn’t know about Preacher i think i’ve provided enough of an inkling for you to click that link up there (which will help me pay for this quite cheap site), and if you did:
Let’s get down to the nitty gritty.
Who plays whom?
I’ve not really got much of an opinion on this to be honest. Had it been five to ten years ago, it would have been Timothy Olyphant as Jesse and Katie Sackhoff as Tulip (Cassidy I have no idea, that guy is going to have to basically be Gary Oldman re-incarnated to pull this off). But times change and faces get older, so i guess that’s out. My hope now is an almost all fresh faced cast of unknowns, with the exception of the Saint of Killers who should be some gnarly old cowboy. Let’s face it, ideally, even now, it would still be Clint Eastwood. But as my favourite character (outside of Cassidy) I’m only ever going to want the best.
oh, and if they can get Patrick Stewart to play Herr Starr, they can dip me in honey and throw me to the lesbians.
Last bit: I’ve been using Saint of Killers as a gamer handle since Steam began, so my head is going to swell just a little if this actually does take off. My fingers are crossed as Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon deserve this, if only so we can see their other awesome stories take off too.
